There has been hike in transport fare by bus drivers for most routes in Ika land, most especially those plying the Lagos, Asaba, Benin Expressway. This was aftermath of the one-day peaceful protest organized under the aegis of Union of Bus and Taxi drivers that ply the Lagos, Asaba, Benin Expressway, at Uromi Junction Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area on Monday March 22, 2021.
This was made known to newsmen during a one- day protest by the bus drivers to seek increase in transport fare for their various routes, giving the high cost of vehicle maintenance as reason for price increase in their services.
Speaking to our reporter, one of the bus drivers who requested to remain unanimous noted that the prices of everything has gone up, saying that the cost of motor parts has skyrocketed due to the economic situation in the country, as a result drivers spend huge sum of money in maintaining their vehicles. He added that after the day’s work they hardly get anything to take home to their families
He disclosed that it was only the price of motor parts that is the problem but that fuel price has also increase, as well as the increase in the prices of foodstuff in the market, making it difficult for them to cope.
He pointed out that the increase in the price of transportation will enable the commercial bus and car drivers serve travelers better. He maintained that it will no longer be four on a seat row as before but rather three on a seat, positing that with this development, travelers will now sit comfortably and enjoy their journey.
