An elder and trado-medicine practitioner, Pa. Friday Irunkwor has appealed to the Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Zanna Ibrahim to urgently caution the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) posted to Ika nation over harassment, intimidation and extortion.
Pa. Irunkwor who expressed dissatisfaction over what he called the inhuman activities of the SARS, said he wants explanation of the duties of the SARS as a department of the Nigerian Police Force if it includes stopping every young man with flashy cars to check their telephone sets, laptops and labeling them yahoo boys to obtain huge sum of money from them as a bail for themselves.
According to him, “The harassment and intimidation by the SARS is no longer a hidden thing. What they now do is to mount road block or move around beer parlours checking phones, laptop of every young men and arresting those they identified as yahoo boys. It has now become a way for SARS to enrich themselves as their suspects pays nothing below N50,000 depending how rich they are to bail themselves”.
He appealed to CP Ibrahim to let him know if the activities of SARS collecting money in the name of yahoo boy is legal or an adopted way of extortion/robbing them. He said the SARS operatives also go as far as to escorting their suspects (the yahoo boys) to the ATM machine to collect money, or forcing them to make electronic money transfer.
Pa. Irunkwor said the Nigeria citizens have no right to privacy any longer, wondering why the SARS operatives would go to the extent of checking someone’s phones and laptops without search warrant to do such.
Continuing, he said, “Yahoo boys to layman understanding are electronic fraudsters. I am appealing to the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim to caution the SARS whose duties now is strictly to check the activities of the yahoo boys to stop using it as a means to enrich themselves for it makes no difference between them and the yahoo boys. Violating our right to privacy through checking of phones and laptops which contains our private personal data should be put to stop”.
He concluded by recalling an incident that happened on Tuesday July 10, 2018 in Agbor where one of the SARS shot one Nick Owah on his left leg for querying the reason why they chased his son home, saying that such occurrence has dragged the name of the police to the mud.
