EDITORIAL: ARE WE CURSED OR WE ARE THE CAUSE?

Jan 29, 2019

Politics in Nigeria is associated with deficiency of good leadership and a do or die affair, as people are desperate to acquire power damning all consequences.

The colonial era has come and gone with slavery, military, and all thanks to our heroes, who fought, for our freedom and independence. We signed an accord of togetherness, with guaranteed hope of equitable distribution of our resources to all the regions like people that entered into marriage

Gone are the days when politicians had the interest of mankind at heart. Having the people’s interest at heart would have helped in one way  or the other in averting the circumstances of begging  for our needs but what we see today is more of ”me and my family first” political mentality in Nigeria.

Nigeria has never been under any curse, but rather we the electorates are the cause of all our woes. Why should we be cursed, by who and for what reason?

We are where we are today because of greed, lust for political power and blaming of past administrations.

Selection of leadership has been our major problem, instead of the traditional election and voting. Corrupt practice is increasing from one Judas to another as are the bribing of INEC officials and snatching of ballot boxes. Buying of the electorates, who are meant to change the system with their votes is now the easy way to bestowing power on the greedy and selfish politicians. Why on earth should someone sell his/ her vote for a token only to remain in hunger for the next four years? Certainly, it is ignorance and foolishness of the highest order.

Our wealth has been looted, misused and mismanaged in favour of the minority political class and their cronies who tend to be merchants than servants to the people, forgetting that leadership is about vision and service. According to Aristotle, the purpose of government is the provision of the best life for the citizens. Even the Nigerian constitution as amended, in chapter 2 sections 13-23 of the 1999 constitution, stated the objectives of how government should be run.

Enough of blaming the past leaders. It has never done us any good or brought any solution. The political sphere in Nigeria, is now a battle field where the ones in power tag their opposition as thieves and tomorrow when the opposition wins, it tags the former as thieves. It is more like the criminal of yesterday is now the ethical of today.

When the electorates sell their votes and refuse to oppose ill political practices, we are the cause and never cursed. Until there is change in our minds, things can never change and we will continue to have leaders who promote sectionalism. And religious intolerance will continue to keep this nation backward.
