Editorial: BEFORE MAKING COVID-19 VACCINATION COMPULSORY

Recently, the Federal Government concluded plans to make COVID-19 vaccination compulsory, beginning with public servants.  Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, stated this recently during a meeting between the Federal Government and Commissioners of Health, in Abuja, that ‘the Federal Government shall, very shortly, unveil its decision on mandatory vaccination for every employee in its service.

It is, therefore, no surprise that the Edo State Government has taken similar directives, declaring Covid-19 vaccination as a condition for accessing government facilities/establishments. The Delta State Government on its part was reported to have made the COVID-19 vaccination compulsory for every resident of the state. Charles Aniagwu, the State Commissioner for Information, going by media reports, made this public shortly after the Executive Council meeting which was presided over by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa at the Government House, Asaba.

Whatever may be the true position, Ika Weekly Newspaper holds the opinion that it is the paramount responsibility of every responsive and responsible government to secure the life chances of its people.

It is, however, important to state that there exist some concerns the government at all levels must address to enable citizens to key into the initiative.

That concern has to do with the issue of confidence in the vaccine. Without a doubt, the majority of Nigerians still nurse the fears that both the Corona Virus and the orchestrated Covid-19 vaccine have/enjoys a spiritual undertone; a belief that partly explains the apathy that greets the call for such vaccination.

It is our view that to do well on this job, governments at all levels must carry out an enlightenment campaign on this subject; Covid-19 Vaccine to help disabuse the minds of Nigerians.

They (public office holders) must guarantee/assure Nigerians of their safety in taking  Covid-19 vaccines. Above all, the government officials must lead by example by getting vaccinated first and make the picture of such exercise public.
