The joy of students, matriculating students, parents, and guardians knows no bounds on Friday 13th October, 2017 as the State School of Nursing Agbor, Delta State held her 28th matriculation ceremony.
The event was chaired by Dr. Emmanuel Tibi, former Provost of College of Education Agbor. One hundred and twenty five (125) student Nurses, comprising two sets of Post Basic students totaling 29, and two sets of basic students totaling 86, matriculated amidst cheers and congratulatory messages to the school authority and matriculating students alike.
Speaking, Dr. Tibi said the Nursing profession occupies a very strategic niche in health matters all over the world. He said he marveled at the level of development that has taken place in the school within a short time.
Dr. Tibi appreciated the Principal, Delta State Government and Community leaders who have made so many efforts to make sure that the school attains set goals. He also commended and congratulated the matriculant, the Principal and the Faculty of the school, for their efforts, stating that he is proud the school has waxed strong and is still waxing stronger, despite the challenges it faced.
In her address, the Principal of the School of Nursing Agbor, Mrs. Tessy Onwuka, while welcoming guests said the school has achieved so much, such as being approved to run ND and HND in Nursing by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
Mrs. Onwuka commended the State Government, Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Health, the Permanent Secretary, Director of Nursing Services, Ministry of Health and others who according to her have contributed towards bringing the school thus far, saying that their efforts have made the institution to be referred to as “the model” School of Nursing Delta state.
She implored matriculants to be focused and dedicated in their pursuit of set objectives and goals in order to actualize their respective ambitions, saying that School of Nursing, Agbor is known for academic excellence.
In the same vein, Mrs. Onwuka commended Onu-Ika Home Branch/USA, the C.B.N Governor, Godwin Emefiele, Ika South Local Government Chairman, Hon. Festus Ofume, and the CEO, Ika Weekly Newspaper, Mr. Steve Mekiriuwa Ashien who donated medical books to the school recently, for their various contributions in taking the school to enviable heights, while calling for more support for the School.
Delivering a key note address on the topic: Infection Prevention Control: The Roles of Nurses, Mr. Ade Osasuyi, of the Department of Nursing, Delta State University, Abraka, said health workers are susceptible to infections, due to the nature of their jobs, and hence all health care professionals must pass through prevention and control mechanism.
In his words, “infection prevention and control is an essential component of quality care and one which was too often been undervalued”. He said, Nurses are key players in providing a safe clinical environment for themselves, their clients, families and the public in general; hence the improvement in training, availability of cleaning teams, on site provision of necessary equipment among other measures will bring about positive improvement for patients, the public and the health care team.
Some of the dignitaries in attendance were: Mr. S. O. Ajuebon, representative of Central Hospital CLO; Mrs. Nwajei, Chief Nursing Officer Ika South Urban Health Center, ASP Ingah S. Adiwu Station officer, representing Agbor D.P.O, Rev Adiene, friend of the School, Mrs. Omo Edoghor Aina, Chairman National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwifery (NANNM) MOH Unit Delta State and others too numerous to mention.
High points of the event were the cultural display by the cultural group of the School, administration of matriculation oath/signing of matriculation register, and presentation of academic award to deserving students.
