The Delta State Governor, His Excellency Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has during the third session of the sixth Synod of the Dioceses of Ika, Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, advised those in leadership position to be on guard against pride and arrogance, saying that Godly counsel is very crucial to our success as leaders.
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, speaking at the Synod which took place at the Cathedral, Church of Saint John, Agbor, Headquarters of Ika South Local Government area of Delta state on Sunday, June 3, 2018, said “Those of us in leadership positions must guard against arrogance. People flatter us and in the end, we sideline those who will tell us the truth”. Every leader must be careful of who they take advice from, and listen to contrary views even when we do not like their guts”. He also advised the outgoing Bishop of Dioceses of Ika, Right Reverend Dr. Peter Imhona Onekpe (JP), to ensure that the right priest that would take over from him on retirement be elected as his successor. The Governor pointed out that the essence of Bishop Onekpe, in ensuring that the right priest takes over from him, is for him to be happy and fulfilled in his retirement that he finished well and strong.
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, referring to several bible quotations which included 2Timothy 4:7, Matthew 24:19, Joshua 1:5-9, among others. He emphasized that “as Christians, we must be strong and of good courage, it is all about our relationship with our Lord, Jesus Christ, with what is happening around us, it is time to unite, it is time for committing ourselves to prayers”. Advising Bishop Onekpe, not only to be strong and courageous, he also commended him on his services to God and the people of the Dioceses for the past 17 years.
Speaking on the theme of the Synod “Finishing Strong” the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa stated that in the bible story, personalities as Eli, Samson, Absalom, Ananias, among others did not finish well and strong, , praying that by December 31, this year Bishop Onekpe should have finished well and strong.
The Governor whose entourage included top government functionaries, include his wife, the founder and initiator of 05 initiative, Dame Edith Okowa, Mr. Patrick Uka, Commissioner for Information, Hon. Anthony Elekeokwuri member representing Ika North East Local Government Area in the State House of Assembly at Asaba, his Ika South Counterpart, Hon. Festus Okoh fondly referred to as Chucky Dandy, Hon. Victor Nwokolo, member representing Ika Federal Constituency at the Federal House of Representative Abuja and Chief Lawrence Osiegbu, Commended the diocese on the successful hosting.
Rt. Rev. Andrew Igenoza, the guest preacher while paying glowing tributes to Rt. Rev. Dr. Onekpe for his work in the Dioceses, he also commended the state governor Dr. Okowa for his presence. Continuing, he appreciated the Dean of the Cathedral, Venerable Patrick Onyekachukwu Okoh, members of the clergy and the entire members of the Diocese for their support which has enabled the retiring Bishop to have performed excellently.
Earlier during the opening session of the Synod, on Saturday June 2, 2018 Bishop Onekpe called on the congregation to make sure that they register for the forthcoming election to have the franchise to vote for the Governor for a second tenure. In his words, “the first step to actualize finishing well for our dear and amiable Governor is for all to massively vote for his re-election come 2019, without any iota of contradiction, his second tenure as Governor of Delta state will be advantageous to the church, the people of Ika nation and to Delta State in general.

On Monday, 4th of June 2018, the Synod featured the Bishop’s charge otherwise known as Presidential Address and Fund raising.
