Members of Idumu-Oza community in Ika South LGA of Delta State, have decried the outrageous electricity bills usually sent to them, by the management of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).
Speaking to Ika Weekly Newspaper reporter during a visit to the community on Monday November 20, 2017, some of the elders complained bitterly about the development.
Mr. Paul Aniemeke, frowned at the outrageous bill that is being sent to members of the community by the authorities of the Benin Electricity Development Company (BEDC). He pleaded with the state government to prevail on BEDC to stop giving them estimated bills which are usually very high and “we find it very difficult to pay such exhorbitant bills.”
On his part, Mr. Chukwuka Kemele, said, “It is quite unfortunate that BEDC have been giving us very high bills, we are farmers and we have no money; they have been giving us community bills of between Two hundred thousand naira to three hundred thousand naira monthly. The community was disconnected since September 2017 by BEDC, yet they still brought a bill of over three hundred thousand naira even after they have disconnected us. We are not happy with the development, so we are pleading with the management of BEDC to reduce their bills because there are no factories or industries that consumes power here in Idumu-Oza; it is outrageous because most of the electricity consumers have only about five electricity bulbs in their houses.
In a related development, Mr. Johnbull Abiagbe, stated, “we are begging BEDC to reduce their bills, the bill is too much for us to pay; imagine billing the community between Two hundred thousand naira to Three hundred thousand naira per month. The community was disconnected two months ago and BEDC is still bringing bills even while we are still in darkness, please we are really appealing to them to reduce the bills because we are farmers.
Chief James Mekwuye, the Oza of Agbor kingdom, also appealed to the management of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to reduce the charges of electricity to Idumu-Oza community, in order for them to be able to pay.
