Jun 8, 2024

EDITORIAL:IKA WEEKLY NEWSPAPER CELEBRATES EBENEZER ONYEAGWU, EXEMPLARY BANKER AND PRIDE OF IKA NATION

Very recently, precisely on the 1st of June, 2024, one of the illustrious sons of Ika nation and A-League Banker in Nigeria, Dr. Onyeagwu Ebenezer, bowed out as the Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director of the foremost digital and sustainable banking powerhouse, Zenith Bank Nigeria PLC, founded by Mr. Jim Ovia, another illustrious son of Ika nation.

Viewed from all prism, Dr. Onyeagwu’s stepping aside after a career spanning well over two decades is not only a success story but from all ramification, a feat that future generations, particularly those desirous of taking a career in banking sector shall study and draw from such account lessons and inspiration.

Aside from leaving behind a very healthy bank, Ebenezer Onyeagwu steward as the Managing Director has created for Nigerians an undisputed digital and sustainable banking powerhouse, arguably the most financially healthy bank presently in the country.

Also very remarkable, and of course another sterling reason why Ebenezer Onyeagwu should be celebrated by Ika nation, is that his creation of a financially solid Zenith Bank occurred at about the same time when so many banks in the country were either gone underground or living on life support.

Again, separate from leaving behind a Zenith Bank that has arguably never been healthier than it is today, another area of his life that remains exemplary for both present and generations to come, is his knack for probity, transparency and accountability.

Take as an illustration, it is factually backed that throughout his stay in the banking sector, first as a staff before his emergence as the Managing Director, there was no case(s) of manipulation, opaque, shady or shoddy deals. There were no reported or perceived traces of financial misappropriation or irregularities.

As the Newspaper celebrates this ambassador of good behavior and professional excellence, another area of interest that must not be left unmentioned is the silent but salient fact that he did not betray his elder brother, Jim Ovia, who graciously extended an invitation to team up with and build a world class financial institution in Nigeria. There were neither quarrels nor disagreement.

This is unprecedented!

No doubt, the likes of Mr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu are not many again in Nigeria of today as many, if not most Nigerians have now found joy in being fraudulent So as many as the likes of the Onyeagwu Ebenezer that we can find who (that) are writing their stories on the sand of time should be highly celebrated and appreciated

It is on this note that the Newspaper calls on all well-meaning sons and daughters of Ika origin to celebrate this illustrious son and ambassador of honesty, transparency and hardwork.

We also call on our youths to shun the habit of taking those fraudulent tendencies as their role models.

Instead of such negative choices, the Newspaper calls on them to lookup to Mr. Ebenezer and other well foresighted Ika indigenes doing very well in their various fields of endeavors and draw life changing lessons from such personalities.
