IKPALA GROUP OF NDOBU IN IGBODO CELEBRATES, AS NEW MEMBERS JOIN THE PRESTIGIOUS GROUP

The initiation of men into Ikpala traditional group, one of the most important cultural events in Igbodo kingdom in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State, took place on Wednesday, January 1, 2025. It was a day filled with excitement and tradition as three new members were officially initiated into the Ikpala Ndobu group.The event, held at the chairman’s compound, Otado Ugbome house, Ndobu village of Igbodo Kingdom, was a colourful display of tradition, culture, and community spirit.
The Ikpala group, known as the red-cap titled men, holds a significant position in the community, being responsible for the traditional rites of the land. The ceremony began with the customary breaking of kolanuts, symbolizing peace, unity, and blessings for the occasion. This act was performed by the Vice-Chairman of the group, Mr. Celestine Friday Tudeme who offered prayers for prosperity and harmony in the community.
A major highlight of the event was the initiation of three new members into the prestigious Ikpala group. The process was deeply symbolic and steeped in tradition. Each initiate was called out individually and sprinkled with native chalk by the members of the group, a gesture signifying purification, acceptance, and blessings. As prayers were offered for the new members, the atmosphere was filled with a sense of reverence and anticipation.
The new initiates are Mr. Onyemaishia Patrick Igbiki, Mr. Onyebuchi Gideon Odinma, and Mr. John Odinma alias A.G Best.
The rules governing the Ikpala group were also read out during the ceremony. This served as a reminder of the responsibilities and expectations placed on members to uphold the values and traditions of the land. The Ikpala group’s dedication to preserving these cultural practices was evident throughout the event.
Music and dance played a significant role in the ceremony. The Ikanga group, accompanied by the melodious sound of the Akpele, entertained the people throughout the event. In a grand procession, the initiates and members of the Ikpala group took to the streets, showcasing the newly inducted members. The sound of traditional gunshots punctuated the air, further adding to the festive atmosphere.
After the ceremony, the initiates and the Vice-Chairman of the Ikpala group spoke with the press. The initiates expressed their gratitude for the honour of being part of the group and pledged to uphold the values and traditions entrusted to them. The Vice-Chairman highlighted the importance of the Ikpala group in maintaining the cultural identity of the community, emphasizing their role in fostering unity and preserving the heritage of Igbodo.
One of the new initiates, Mr. Onyemaishia Patrick Igbiki, shared his gratitude and story with the press after the event. He revealed that he had wanted to join the group for a long time but couldn’t afford the initiation cost. However, the chairman of the group, Dr. Otado Christian Mbulu, stepped in and covered the expenses, making it possible for him to join. “I am so grateful to our Chairman Otado. Mr. Patrick said. “He didn’t just pay for me; he showed me kindness that I will never forget. I pray that God will bless him and reward him greatly.”

Members of the Ikpala Ndobu present at the initiation ceremony are Dr. Otado Christian Mbulu (Chairman), Mr. Celestine Friday Tudeme (Vice-Chairman), Mr. Onyeje Samuel Nwaka, Mr. Uwadiegu Sunday, Mr. Happy Okonkwor (Provost), Mr. Odum Emeka, Mr. Odum Agiliga, Mr. Jinanwa Onyinye (Ezenwoke), Mr. Peter Tudeme, Mr. Augustine Achomuba, Mr. Mike Ekpele, Chief Ngozi Daniel Chika, Mr. Afam John, Mr. Prince Isimemen, and the new initiates.
The Ikpala ceremony is not just an event but a reflection of the rich cultural tapestry that defines Igbodo. Through ceremonies like this, the community continues to honour its traditions while passing them on to future generations, ensuring that the legacy of the Ikpala group remains alive in years to come.
