INMATES TO SERVE MINIMAL JAIL TERM IN COMMUNITY SERVICE

As part of their familiarization visit and in a bid to have smooth and better society, officers of the Non Custodian unit of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Agbor in Ika South L.G.A of Delta State, on Thursday November 19, 2020 paid courtesy visit to Ika Weekly Newspaper Office at 215 Old Lagos/Asaba Road, Agbor.
The officers who were warmly received by Ika Weekly management expressed joy and commended the print media for the great work they are doing in Ika land.

Speaking during the visit, the leader of the group, Deputy Superintendent of Correction (DSC) C.K Idiabana disclosed that with the Nigeria Correction Service Act 2020, the new unit, Non Custodian Unit was recently created, and given full responsibility to interface with members of the wider society, including Civil Society Organizations, media houses, religious organizations, among others.

He pointed out that the Non Custodian Unit is saddled with the responsibility of taking care of inmates that have been given minimal sentence by the court, saying that rather than serving their jail term at the Custodian centre, the inmates will serve by doing community service under the supervision of the officers of the unit.

Furthermore, DSC Idiabana further noted that the new unit has also been empowered to amicably resolve rifts between aggrieved parties, and ensure that reconciliation and peace are sustained.

The officer finally revealed that the unit has also been given the responsibility to liaise with traditional rulers in the settlement of inter community disputes, misunderstandings among many others
Responding, the publisher, Ika Weekly Newspaper, Mr. Steve Ashien commended the visitors and Government for the good initiative, saying that the new development will help to decongest the prisons in the country.
