THE LANDS BELONG TO ILEJE QUARTERS – Umunede Monarch

Following the recent protest by some residents of Ileje Quarters, Umunede in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State, over land encroachment by Emuhu Community in Ika South Local Government Area in Delta State, the traditional ruler of Umunede kingdom, HRM Dr. Ezeagwu Ezenwali 1(JP) has disclosed that the lands belong to Ileje Quarters, urging them to peacefully attend to the issue. He stated this during the week while addressing the press at his palace, stressing that peace and dialogue remains the solution to every dispute.

HRM Dr. Ezeagwu appealed to Ileje community to respect the Ogele of Ileje Quarters whom he said remains the head of Ileje, saying that those who uphold the law never break it. He advised those selling their lands to remember their unborn children.

Speaking further, HRM Dr. Ezeagwu Ezenwali 1(JP) used the opportunity to call on his subjects to always put on their face masks as directed by the State Government, saying that COVID-19 is real and dangerous. He enjoined all to maintain and observe all precautionary measures directed by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The monarch further noted that the present encroachment of Emuhu people into Ileje Quarters of Umunede kingdom is highly embarrassing, calling on relevant authorities to check these excesses of Emuhu people.

Ika Weekly reporter later gathered that Ileje Quarters shares common boundary with Ile Quarters and Owa kingdom and not with Emuhu Community as envisaged by many.

ILEJE COMMUNITY IN UMUNEDE PROTESTS ALLEGED LAND ENCROACHMENT

Residents of Ileje quarters in Umunede in Ika North East L.G.A of Delta State, on Tuesday May 5, 2020 protested the alleged encroachment of their lands by Emuhu Community in Ika South with whom they share common boundary. The protest saw a great number of men and women including youths match in protest against the alleged harassment and intimidation from Emuhu Community.

The protesters were seen dancing along the palace road, chanting protest songs, while police officers walked alongside them to ensure that the demonstration did not result to violence. The protest which lasted for many hours caused gridlock in the community.

Speaking to Ika Weekly reporter, HRM Dr. Ezeagwu Ezenwali 1 (JP) frowned against the protest, saying that the protesters failed to abide by the Rule of Law. He added that no individual or group is above the law and no one should take laws into his/her hands. The Monarch further disclosed that any individual or group purchasing land between Ileje and Ile is only wasting money, because the entire land there is the boundary between Umunede and Emuhu and belongs to the Government.

At Ileje Quarters, a prominent individual who pleaded anonymous while addressing the Press said he was not involved in the protest, though he was aware of it. He disclosed that the people have the  right to voice out their grievances whenever the need arises, saying that the people of Ileje stood up to the present situation because they could no longer tolerate the intimidation from an outside community, and betrayal by their own people. Continuing, he noted that the issue had lingered for many years with no positive solution. He therefore affirmed that they would take legal action and ensure that justice prevails. He urged residents of Ileje quarters to stand firm, focus, and be law abiding.

Also speaking to Ika Weekly reporter, one of the residents said the land feud started two years ago and many casualties have as a result been recorded. According to him, “Our Odogwu, Chief Ike has refused to address this issue. Our people are being harassed and molested by indigenes of Emuhu, yet, our Odogwu has remained mute and indifferent. He has over the years benefited from us, but has refused to attend to our plight.”
