OVER 300 PUPILS BENEFIT FROM EWURU EDUCATION INCENTIVE PROGRAMME

Over 300 pupils of Uweifo Primary School and Hope Comprehensive Nursery and Primary Schools, Ewuru, Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, benefitted from this year’s Ewuru Education Incentive Programme (E.E.I.P), which provides writing materials to pupils annually. The programme this year was held on Tuesday, September 12th, 2023, at Uweifo Primary School, Ewuru.

Ewuru Education Incentive Programme (E.E.I.P), is a programme put together by Ewuru Concerned Citizens, comprising of Ewuru sons and daughters both at home and in the Diaspora, to ease the burdens of parents.

The materials distributed include; school bags, exercise, text and drawing books, pencils, eraser’s, rulers, sharpeners and others.

Speaking during the event, one of the Home Programme Executor, the Oku Dein Wu-ukpe of Agbor kingdom, Chief Benjamin Ogwun JP, disclosed that the programme was initiated in the year 201, shortly after his retirement from the Nigerian Police, saying that it has remained an annual event since then.

He noted that the programme is meant to assist parents who are financially constrained in providing their wards with essential educational materials and also to give back to the society, disclosing that the Initiator/Masterminder of the programme is the Publisher of Ika Weekly Newspaper, Mr. Steve Ekiri-Mekeriuwa  Ashien.

The Okwu Dein Wu-ukpe, stated that initially the programme was covering primary school pupils, secondary school’s students and indigent students in tertiary institutions, noting that their intention is to see that their beneficiaries become useful citizens of the society.

While appreciating the benevolence of their sons and daughters, who have always contributed funds whenever they are called upon, he prayed God to continue to bless and replenish their purses in a million folds.

The Chairman of the programme who is the Publisher of Ika Weekly Newspaper, Mr. Steve Ekiri-Mekiriuwa Ashien, while speaking frowned at the attitude of some indigenes, saying that each time they are called upon to assist, they ignore the call, maintaining that no matter how little one contributes, it will go a no longer around.

He equally frowned at some of the secondary school students whom, he said the group had assisted on several occasions during the inception of the programme in the year 2011, lamenting that he and other members of the group are ageing by the day and needs others who will wear their shoes when they are long gone.

Continuing he appreciated all who have always responded to their calls, saying that giving comes with a spirit irrespective of one’s financial status, maintaining that the prayer one receives for being generous is immeasurable.

Speaking also the representative of the Local Education Authority, Ika South Local Government Area, Mrs. Franca Adinkwu, applauded the donors, saying that she has always been proud of the people of Ewuru for their zeal towards education and urged them to keep up the spirit.

The school Head Mistress of Uweifo Primary School, Mrs. Odigwu Victoria and proprietress of Hope Comprehensive Nursing and  Primary school,  and Mrs. Patience Ekpah, who could not hide their joy, said they are proud of the generosity of the people of Ewuru, adding that Ewuru people are peace loving and accommodating.

According to them, “We are fortunate to be in .” They prayed God to reward the generosity of the donors and to replenish their purse in thousand folds.

Some of the parents who spoke with our correspondent, Mrs. Ifeoma Osagie, Mrs. Isioma and others, noted that their joy knew no bound, maintaining that most of them cannot afford to buy the items, as most of them have more than three children in the two respective schools.

Some of the pupils, Favour Ufoma and Daniel Victor, expressed their gratitude, assuring that they will make judicious use of the items and prayed God to bless their benefactors for their kind gesture.

The Iyase of Agbor kingdom, Chief Augustine Emenim and the representative of the Dein of Agbor Kingdom, Chief Augustine Onwubuoya, called on other well-meaning individuals to emulate the benevolence of the Elites of Ewuru, saying that generosity pays.

Among others present at the occasion were; the Parish Priest of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church Ewuru; Rev. Fr. Jude Afamefuni Okwudi, Pa John Egwabor, the wife of Ika Weekly Newspaper Publisher; Mrs. Theresa Ashien, the Iyase of Agbor kingdom; Chief Augustine Emenim, Dr. Goddy Ibeh, Mr. Thomas Ashien and many others.
