In a democratic government such as Nigeria, leadership derives its power from the mandate of the people who ideally set the tasks and appoint an elected few to implement the set tasks on their behalf. This therefore, means that fostering positive change for the good of the electorates based on inherently acceptable values that characterize effective representation from the leaders is paramount thus, encouraging inclusion in all aspects and bridges the gap between the leaders and the led.
Given the pedigree of Hon. (Barr.) Victor Nwokolo, the man whose target is to achieve effective representation of his people, replicates a progressive leader concerned with fostering change.
Hon. (Barr.) Victor Nwokolo who is presently serving his 8th year representing the people of Ika Federal Constituency at the Federal House of Representative in Abuja under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had a humble beginning. He was born without a silver spoon into the family of Late Mr. Ignatious Nwokolo who in his lifetime was a trader and hailed from Ilabo quarters in Igbodo Kingdom, Ika North-East Local Government Area of Delta State. He attended Iko Comprehensive School where he obtained his West African School Certificate and got admitted into the College of Education, Benin and graduated in 1982. He furthered his education at the University of Benin where he studied Law and graduated in 1993 and proceeded to the Nigerian Law School in 1994 and was called to the Bar in the same year.
Hon. (Barr.) Victor Nwokolo as an hardworking young man who lost his father to the cold hands of death, assisted his mother to sell clothes in order to make ends meet while in school. He was full of determination to succeed in life and later became self employed before he gained employment to serve with the department of the State Security Service.
The young and versatile Hon. (Barr.) Victor Nwokolo shot into political limelight when he contested and became the House of Representative member representing Ika Federal Constituency in 2011 under the platform of Accord Party and was re-elected in 2015 under PDP.
Apart from his legislative interests which include Public Procurement, Marriage and Aviation, Hon. (Barr.) Nwokolo as a servant leader went out of his comfort zone overtime to make impacts in his constituency with numerous life changing programmes aimed at improving the lot of the youths and the poor. Majority of his efforts were unknown to many Ika people because the law maker chooses not to blow his trumpet.
Not quite long ago, precisely on December 15, 2016, he set a record with his economic empowerment which other legislators in the House of Assembly and political bigwigs from Ika zone have emulated in giving back to their people. But beyond the pomp, the occasion served as an opportunity for the law maker Hon. (Barr.) Victor Nwokolo to look more into his constituency’s multi-faceted problems and later successfully pushed for the rehabilitation of more roads both in Ika South and Ika North East respectively as part of his constituency project which will commence after the raining season. This is an effort to complement the SMART agenda of His Excellency, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, the governor of Delta State.
The event had Hon. (Barr.) Victor Nwokolo give out grants to empower 240 women, motorcycles to 6 physically challenged persons, power generating sets to 14 entrepreneurs, 5 complete block moulding machines, 4 welding machines, starter packs to 3 male hair stylists and also starter packs to 15 female hair stylists. Others include, 45 motorcycles and 10 tricycles, 18 grinding machines, sewing machines to 19 fashion designers, starter packs to 5 welders, rentals plastic chairs and tables to 2 people, trading grants to 4 people, printing machine, one vulcanizing machine, 2 patrol vans to the police in both local government areas to encourage security coverage and educational grants to 80 students in tertiary institutions.
The roll call of dignitaries who witnessed the event was long and among them includes his colleagues, state legislators, Delta State, Delta North and Local Government PDP Chairmen, traditional rulers and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa who in his remark observed that the event had brought together party supporters, electorates and personalities in Ika Federal Constituency for the common purpose of effective representation. The governor added that the programme, which gears towards entrepreneurship, skill acquisition and empowerment for the youths, was very timely and that the laudable project which is capital intensive amidst the recession in the country will reduce poverty and allow peaceful co-existence among the Ika people. It could be recalled that the law maker during his speech at the event noted that the empowerment programme carried out was just the first phase as more is expected to come in no distant time. However, the initiative of the programme aside Hon. (Barr.) Victor Nwokolo appreciating his people according to him was to gradually transform Ika Community into a producing community rather than a consuming community.
“Let me assure us that in addition to giving our people quality representation at Abuja and bringing the dividends of democracy nearer to our people, we are also poised at supporting the SMART agenda of our able governor whom we all have to embrace in order to enhance the speedy development of our state and people and more for our own people of Ika nation as can be seen in the various communities of Ika Federal Constituency,” Hon. (Barr.) Victor Nwokolo said.
However, the assistance of Hon. (Barr.) Victor Nwokolo to various establishments in Ika land to encourage the sustainability of their businesses as well as his empowerment has earned him more accolades and prayers. One of the beneficiaries of the economic empowerment programme, Nduka Alika, who got a tricycle, said the assistance has helped him as a married youth with kids to put food on his family’s table. He added that for the spectacular performance of Hon. (Barr.) Victor Nwokolo whom he described as a humble leader and a man with a big heart, re-electing him for the third tenure will not be out of place as he has proven himself worthy to serve through his effective and result-oriented representation at the green chamber.
Hon. (Barr.) Victor Nwokolo just like many who grew up without their father yet came from nowhere to become prominent in the society is presently the Chairman, House Committee on Petroleum Upstream and he has promised to remain steadfast in the course of providing the dividends of democracy to the people of Ika Federal Constituency. Therefore, the need for all to encourage him is paramount to enable Ika nation get to her promised land.
