The family of Mr. & Mrs. Samuel Morka of No. 11, Umunne Street, Ika North East LGA, has been rendered homeless following the heavy down pour that wrecked havoc in their premises on the morning of Tuesday, October 16, 2018.
Speaking with Ika Weekly reporters during their visit to the scene, Mrs. Ruth Morka disclosed that they were asleep when the heavy downpour started at about 4am on the said date. According to her, “When the rain started, I told my husband to allow me go outside and check if we had left anything susceptible to damage outside. On opening the door, I saw flood encroaching our house and before I could utter a word, everywhere had already been flooded with water including our sitting room, bedroom, kitchen, toilet and the entire compound which got some vital documents and properties such as foam, chairs and clothes damaged.
She stated that the damage of the downpour would have been worse if not for the quick intervention of their neighbours who assisted in the control of the flood. She appealed to spirited Ika citizens and the governments to come to their aid to enable them replace the damaged properties particularly, their certificates and that of the members of the family.
In a survey by the reporters on the cause of the flood, it was discovered that the flood was as a result of some planks that were used in the construction of the drainage system of the ongoing construction work at the street. The planks fell from the slab and got the drainage blocked, thereby obstructing the free flow of water to other channels.
According to residents who bared their minds, they stated that the drainage was well constructed as it is deep and wide enough to ensure free flow of water. They thanked the contractor for a job well done and urged them to try finish to up the job.
