A team of Public enlightenment officers of the Federal Road Safety Corp R55.22, Agbor unit command, led by Officer Esther Okoh, on Sunday, took safety campaigns to churches in Ika land where they preached safe road usage.
In one of the churches visited by the officers, Springs International Worship Centre, the presiding Pastor, George Ugbome was elated to have them and graciously handed over the microphone to them.
In her address Officer Esther Okoh, talked extensively on the various causes of road traffic accidents. She explained that Road accident is the most unwanted omen to happen to a road user, though they happened quite often, saying that the most unfortunate thing is that we don’t learn from our mistakes on road. Most of the road users are quite well aware of the general rules and safety measures while using the roads but laxity on their parts always leads, to accidents and crashes.

She further explained that the main causes of accidents are due to human errors and that some of the common behaviours of humans which lead to road traffic accidents are, over-speeding, drunken driving, distraction of drivers, red light jumping, avoiding safety gears like seat belts and helmets, non-adherence to lane driving, following a one way traffic which in many cases leads to collusion with on-coming vehicles, overtaking in a wrong manner, total avoidance of traffic laws, making calls while driving, taking intoxicants while on the steering or riding a bike.
Officer Okoh added that road users do not refer to drivers alone but pedestrians too. On the case of pedestrians, she said using of ear-piece on the road should be avoided and making calls while crossing the road and crossing without caution should also be avoided.
Officer Okoh concluded by emphasizing that road accidents can be prevented if we adhere to traffic laws and are conscious of the many causes of road accidents she had earlier mentioned.
