YOU CAN SPREAD COVID-19 BY WEARING FACE MASK–ES Ika South

Residents of Ika have been warned that they can spread the dreaded Corona Virus by wearing face mask as the face mask can trap bacteria and spread same if not properly disposed.

This warning was handed down by the Secretary, Ika South Local Government Health Authority Dr. Nwabuwa Adaeze during a meeting at the Local Government Epidemic Response preparedness Committee (EPRC) and Rapid Response Team (RRT) held on Thursday March 26, 2020 at the Local Government Secretary Agbor.

The Secretary while giving update on Covid -19 said that people put on face mask to prevent contacting the virus but forgot that as they cover their face, they cough yawn and wear the mask for a long period of time while during that period, the face mask tends to trap bacteria which may later be spread to others .She noted that mask wearing worsen the spread of the virus rather than curtail it. She maintained that health workers are the ones meant to put on mask as they attend to patient and the mask is discarded immediately after use.

She noted that the country has recorded 61 cases of the virus while Edo State which is a boundary State to Delta has recorded one saying that as far as the virus is in Edo State, there is high risk that  Delta State might soon join the States that have recorded cases of the virus.

Dr. Adaeze pointed out that Corona Virus also known as Covid-19 was discovered in China December 2019, hence the name Covid-19 but lamented that the Chinese hid it for so long. As she highlighted some of the ways one can contact it to include through, droplets, of sneezing coughing by someone who is infected.

The Secretary maintained that the mortality rate of the  virus is one percent which  means if one hundred persons contact the virus only one may die but noted that the reason why one should  be concerned is because one does not knows who that one person may be.

Furthermore she stated that some of the ways to avoid the virus was by washing one’s hands at regular interval explaining that one must wash one’s hand properly for not less than 20 seconds and with soap under running water.

Another way she said is that one should avoid coughing on one’s palms but on one’s elbow and not on handkerchief or towel but on tissue that would be disposed immediately, while adding that  keeping social distance would also prevent one from getting the virus.

She further maintained that the elderly and those who are ill are the ones who are supposed to make use of the face mask as their immune system is poor. She confirmed that the symptoms of the person who has contacted the virus include dry cough, fever, sore throat, lost of sense of smell or test while she advised that one should not rush to go to the hospital if one notice he or she is having any of these symptoms as they may be just ordinary but that one should self isolate to be sure but if after 7 days the symptoms persist then one can visit the hospital.

The Chairman Ika South Local Government Council Barr. Victor Okoh who was present at the meeting ordered the Divisional Police Officers in the Local Government to ensure no burial ceremonies, parties, clubbing, churches services or any event with more than 20 persons hold in their jurisdiction in line with the directives of the State Governor.

He noted that for market places regularly sanitization should be carried out by the committee as it would not be easy to close the markets at the moment so that people do not starve.
